A Brazilian archbishop says all those who helped a child rape victim secure an abortion are to be excommunicated from the Catholic Church.
The girl, aged nine, who lives in the north-eastern state of Pernambuco, became pregnant with twins.
It is alleged that she had been sexually assaulted over a number of years by her stepfather.
The excommunication applies to the child's mother and the doctors involved in the procedure.

Very harsh coming from the archbishop. How else could they help the young girl except be 'accomplices'?
I suppose the photo is appropriate in this context!

It is unfortunately to be expected. Considering that even in the West, the Catholic church's attitude towards contraception is still tantamount to a crime against humanity (by misrepresenting factual health information), expecting the church in Latin America (socially much more conservative, and facing competition from evangelical Pentecostals) to have a sane attitude towards abortion is like expecting a pig to fly.
At least they didn't stone her for adultery...
