The organisation is naming itself the Congress of the People, after the gathering in Kliptown in Soweto in 1955 that drew up the Freedom Charter, a text which became a theme of the fight against discrimination.

Cope, the acronym that the party has chosen, argues that the ANC has abandoned the values of the Freedom Charter.
